Description
There is something enigmatic about the Tiger, no wonder it has remained as the most favorite predators of sportsmen, naturalists, foresters and now the tourists. What is about the Tiger that has got people to leave the comforts of their home and spend their lifetimes in doing something about the Tiger.
A Dunbar Brander, James Forsyth, Richard Lydekker, Billy Arjan Singh, Kenneth Anderson, M K Ranjitsinh, and several more stalwarts dedicated their lives to the cause of Tiger conservation. Having seen my first Tiger in 1990 January in Ranthambhore, I also got committed to the cause of conserving the Tiger in my own little way. The route I found was tourism. For it is tourism which gives a decent living to the community which has been dependent on the forests for biomass. The initial tourists to the national parks were the Shikaris but after the launch of the Project Tiger.
There was a metamorphic change in the year 1972 when Project Tiger was started supported by theWildlife Protection Act. Subsequently, slowly but steadily tourism grew, but it was only in the early 21st century that tourism took roots in the various national parks, and what began has changed the livelihood of thousands of people around the national parks.
