Description

The Jalna Education Society was formed in 1957 with an aim to provide Higher Education to the students of the town and nearby rural areas. In fact, establishment of a full-fledged College was a long felt need of Jalna. Being an important commercial town with a population over 70000 and having about 10 High Schools, the students from the town and from the neighboring areas felt the absence of a College for higher education in this town. As in those days students had to go to Hyderabad for the purpose of higher education, though a few colleges were started at Aurangabad, the need for a college in Jalna was continued to be felt. Efforts to start a college in Jalna dates back to 1957 when, our First Prime Minister Late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru visited this place. A purse fund of Rs.21, 211/- was raised and presented to him. Panditji returned this purse to the people of Jalna for the purpose of higher education in Jalna. With this inspiration "The Jalna Education Society, Jalna" was formed on 2nd July, 1957 with the Presidentship of Shri Rustomji Jalnawalla. Many more efforts were made to augment the resources, which gave further impetus, and an application for the grant of affiliation was submitted to the Osmania University, Hyderabad. The University was not inclined to entertain the application and to take up new commitment in this region in view of the impending transfer to its territorial jurisdiction to the Marathwada University, which had just then been established. However, due to the support of Bombay Government and the personal interest taken by Shri S.R. Dongerkeri, the first Vice-Chancellor of the Marathwada University, the Osmania University granted provisional affiliation as a special case in 1958 and the College started functioning since 14th July, 1958. And then the affiliation of this College was transferred to the Marathwada University on 23rd August, 1958.

Although started with a total of 82 students in the faculties of Arts & Commerce, this College initiated an impulse of new life in the field of education.
